The Lido festival is halfway through and still without a favorite. He was disappointed when he returned to Mexico in the autobiographical “Bardo” by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. After lean years, Darren Aronofsky returned to form with the poignant film “The Whale” and the great role of Brendan Fraser. Penelope Cruz’s roles in Emanuele Crialese’s “L’immensita” and Cate Blanchett in Todd Field’s “Tara” were carried away.

Although the 79th festival in Venice has already passed the halfway point, it has not yet received a title that would captivate audiences and critics without any reservations. The best reviews so far were Darren Aronofsky with the amazing “The Whale” and Todd Field with the movie “TAR”. In both cases, critics emphasize that it is largely due to the actors of the main roles who created masterful creations.

Penelope Cruz, who in the Italian film “L’immensita” by Emanuele Crialese, impresses no less than in the nominee An Oscar creation at the last Almodovar.

On the occasion of any of the great masters’ titles present in the Lido competition this year, the word “revelation”, so awaited at film festivals, has not yet been used.

An autobiographical trend on the Lido

“Bardo. False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths” is the Polish title of the highly anticipated competition film in Venice, directed by Alejandro G. Inarritu, a Mexican who has been filming in Hollywood. It is also the first film that the director made in his hometown since the famous “Amores Perros” Mexico. It is not difficult to predict that he is clearly autobiographical.

However, he did not receive any compliments and thunderous applause after the screening – on the contrary, not all of them lasted until the end of the three-hour screening, and the feeling of relief afterwards dominated a large part of the reviews. Peter Bradshaw from “Guardian” writes about the film “extremely stylish in terms of production, but difficult to bear”, and almost all critics accuse the artist of excessive self-love and mannerism. Further accusations include pretentiousness and a lack of narrative consistency, without which it is difficult to find a coherent work. It’s a pity, because the artist himself calls the painting one of the most important in his oeuvre, and the fans of the magical realism he promised have sharpened their teeth on “Bardo …”.

Autobiographical themes can also be seen in the Italian painting “L’immensita” by Emanuele Crialese, in which Penelope Cruz, as a mother of three children, finds refuge from loneliness in exceptional relations with them. The action of the film takes place in Rome in the 1970s. The eldest of the children, Adriana, introduces herself to the neighborhood children as a boy, risking being taunted by her younger siblings. A once-loving husband turns out to be an aggressor when a girl declares himself a transgender person. The mother escapes from the sad everyday life into the world of imagination, into which she also introduces children.

Crialese, a transgender person, admitted at the conference that Adriana was himself as a child, and in the film he created a story inspired by his own memories, albeit with fictional threads. Critics, deliberating on Cruz’s performance and her dazzling acting, call it “Sophia Loren’s crossroads and the gleam of the sun” (Screen International).

In turn, in the new painting by Todd Field “TAR”, written especially for Cate Blanchett (this time not an autobiographical one), we focus on the topic of the genius artist and the question about his status in today’s world. The director admitted that if the actress had not accepted the role, the project would have ended up in the trash. Field made the story of a fictional conductor – the first woman in history to conduct the largest German orchestra, fitting into the endless discussion about the position and privileges of outstanding artists who have gained the status of “untouchable” in Western culture. The title of the film is also the name of the heroine played by Blanchett.

The painting immediately won the status of an Oscar-winning certainty, and Blanchett herself was the undisputed candidate for the statuette (for the seventh time, two of which have already won Oscars). It is possible that next year’s Oscar-winning fight in the category: the best actress will take place between the two stars of the Venice festival.

Finally, a film that is halfway through critics’ highest marks: “The Whale”, returning to the Lido after Darren Aronofsky’s lean years. Based on a play by Samuel D. Hunter, who also wrote the script for the film, it is primarily a great return to the cinema after a long break of the sensational Brendan Fraser, once the star of “The Mummy”. The screenwriter present at Lido said he based his character “on a personal experience with weight gain and depression from earlier years.”

– I have a history of self-medication with food and a history of depression. I used to be much bigger than I am now. Plus, I was gay in a fundamentalist religious high school, which was not easy … I was afraid to write it. When I started working, I decided that it would be best to make someone who had an unwavering faith in the good of man a hero, Hunter told the conference. Such is the title “whale” played by Fraser, weighing over 300 kg, hiding from people.

The actor plays the role of a lonely teacher who “eats” his own misfortunes and does not leave the house at all, and at the same time tries to renew relations with his daughter, who has not been seen for years. His marriage fell apart when he realized he was gay, and he feels guilty all the time.

Critics are already choosing Fraser, forgotten by the cinema in recent years, after losing his youthful qualities and slim figure, as one of the Oscar-winning favorites next year.

Following in the footsteps of Cannes, the longtime director of the Venetian event, Alberto Barbera, has been striving for the presence of Hollywood stars at the Lido for years. This year, even Penelope Cruz and Cate Blanchett did not arouse the madness that accompanied the appearance of the 27-year-old star of Luka Guadagnino’s next film “Bones and All”.

Timothee Chalamet, who first achieved enormous popularity with “Those days, those nights” by the same director, and recently “Dune” by Denis Villeneuve appeared at the premiere in a bold outfit that completely revealed his back and shoulders. For this blood-red, which was supposed to be a wink of an eye at the heroes of Guadagnino’s film, who turn out to be cannibals. The wild crowds, attracted by the young star to his premiere, even required the intervention of Italian carabinieri, which is extremely rare on Lido.

“Bones and All” is a completely different Guadagnino than the one from the melodramatic “Those Days …”. In “Bones and All” we get a story about a couple of cannibals traveling through the American Midwest. But the Italian director would not be himself if he did not show their story as a study of the characters of two people whose desires cannot come true. Although in a completely different convention, as usual, Guadagnino revolves around the topics he likes most: the fascination with youth and the body, the pitfalls of adolescence, and finally the topic of excluding “others” who do not fit in with normalcy.

Before the audience, among others, the “Blonde” by Andrew Dominik and “The Son” of the Oscar winner Florian Zeller, scheduled for the last day of the competition screenings.
