The “Doomsday Clock,” which represents the dangers to mankind, came the closest to midnight yesterday due to the conflict in the Ukraine, nuclear tensions, and the environmental disaster.

The clock’s hands were changed from 100 seconds to midnight to 90 seconds to midnight by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which refers to it as a “metaphor for how near mankind is to self-annihilation.”

The Bulletin’s scientific and security board and its board of sponsors, which is made up of 11 Nobel laureates, decide each year whether to move the hands of the symbolic clock forward or backward.

The clock’s hands moved to 100 seconds before midnight in January 2020, the closest they had ever been to midnight in their history, and stayed there for the following two years.

The Bulletin said that it was moving the clock’s hands forward this year “primarily, but not entirely, as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the elevated risk of nuclear escalation.”

The disintegration of international norms and institutions necessary to reduce the hazards connected with developing technology and biological threats like Covid-19, as well as the ongoing challenges posed by the climate catastrophe, were additional factors, it was said.
